MSW Field Placement: What to Expect
MSW Field Placement: What to Expect
Field placement (also known as practicum or field education) is a required part of every accredited MSW program where students gain hands-on experience working in real social work settings under professional supervision. Most programs require at least 900 hours of field education, allowing students to apply classroom learning in real-world environments.
What Is Field Placement in an MSW Program?
Field placement is a required component of all accredited MSW programs in which students work in supervised, real-world social work settings.
According to the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), field education is considered
the “signature pedagogy” of social work and is designed to prepare students for professional
practice:

In most cases, choosing a program with strong field placement opportunities is essential for building the skills and experience needed for licensure and employment.
In Online MSW programs, placements are arranged in your local community whenever possible. The USM MSW program currently has 55 practicum partnerships across 15 states and is continuously adding agencies each semester.

How Many Hours Is MSW Field Placement?
CSWE-accredited MSW programs require a minimum of 900 hours of supervised field education,
typically completed over the course of the program:

With Advanced Standing, the requirement is 500 hours minimum.
These hours are usually divided across multiple placements, allowing students to build both foundational and specialized skills.
What Does Field Placement Look Like?
Most MSW programs include two types of field placement experiences:
Foundation Placement
- Focuses on generalist social work practice
- Provides exposure to diverse populations and settings
- Builds core skills in assessment, case management, and communication
Advanced Placement
- Focuses on your area of specialization (such as clinical or health care social work)
- Offers more responsibility and hands-on experience
- Prepares you for professional roles after graduation
Many programs structure field education in this two-phase model to ensure both breadth
and depth of training:

What Do You Do During Field Placement?
During field placement, you apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world situations.
Common responsibilities include:
- Conducting client assessments
- Assisting with case management
- Participating in counseling or therapy sessions
- Connecting clients with community resources
- Working alongside licensed social workers
Field education is designed to help students develop the competencies required for ethical and effective social work practice.
How Many Hours Per Week Is Field Placement?
Field placement typically requires 15–25 hours per week, depending on your program and schedule.
Many students complete these hours alongside coursework, making time management an important part of the MSW experience.
Can You Work While Completing Field Placement?
Yes, many students continue working while completing their field placement, especially in part-time MSW programs.
However, because field placement requires consistent weekly hours, students should be prepared to balance:
- Coursework
- Field placement
- Work and personal responsibilities
Choosing a flexible program can make this balance more manageable.
USM's online MSW offers several paces and pathways to your goal.
Why Field Placement Matters

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you get paid for MSW field placement?
Most MSW field placements are unpaid because they are part of the educational requirements for the degree. However, some employers may offer stipends or paid opportunities. In addition, the USM MSW program allows for employment-based internships if they meet the internship criteria. This can be a significant benefit to those already working in the social service or health care sectors.
Is field placement required for an MSW?
Yes. Field placement is a required component of all CSWE-accredited MSW programs.
Can field placement be completed online?
Field placement itself is nomrally completed in person at an approved site, even if your coursework is online, as there are limited opportunities for solely digital clinical interactions. However, if there is an opportunity to complete practicum online in a fully digital format (i.e., clinical text hotline or phone call hotline), then it may be completed as a field placement. USM assists students with finding field placement sites in their local communities.
Is field placement difficult?
Field placement can be challenging, but it is also one of the most valuable parts of the MSW experience because it prepares you for real-world practice.
