What Is an Advanced Standing MSW?

An Advanced Standing MSW is a specialized pathway for students who have already earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW, or its equivalent) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Because BSW graduates have already completed foundational social work coursework and field education, advanced standing programs allow them to skip the first year of a traditional MSW program and move directly into advanced clinical and specialization courses.

As a result, many students can complete their MSW in as little as 12–18 months, compared to the typical two-year timeline. USM's advanced standing MSW can be completed in just one year.

Who Qualifies for Advanced Standing MSW Programs?

To be eligible, students typically must:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Meet GPA requirements
  • Some programs may require that a student earned their bachelor's degree within a recent time window. USM's MSW does not have this requirement.

Advanced standing programs are designed specifically for students who have already demonstrated competency in core social work principles and field practice.

How Much Faster Is an Advanced Standing MSW?

Students in advanced standing programs can often:

  • Graduate in 1 year (full-time)
  • Complete fewer credits and field hours
  • Enter the workforce or licensure track sooner

Many programs allow BSW graduates to complete their MSW in about one year instead of two, significantly reducing time and cost.

Can Advanced Standing MSW Still Lead to Clinical Licensure (LCSW, etc.)?

Yes. An advanced standing MSW is the same degree as a traditional MSW—it simply allows you to complete it faster.

Graduates are still eligible to:

  • Pursue licensure (LMSW, LCSW)
  • Complete supervised clinical hours
  • Work in clinical, healthcare, and community settings
