The accredited Master of Social Work (MSW) program at the University of Saint Mary prepares you to serve individuals, families, and communities through ethical, evidence-based practice. The program is designed to prepare students for a multitude of professional practice positions, particularly in health care, mental health, and forensic social work systems of care.

MSW Program Structure

The University of Saint Mary offers flexible pathways to meet your goals:

Two MSW Specializations

Regardless of your Track, you can choose to specialize in the following areas. Both specializations provide focused, real-world training aligned with your career goals. 


Field Experience and Real-World Preparation

Field education is a core component of the USM MSW program. You’ll gain hands-on experience through supervised placements in settings such as:

  • Healthcare systems
  • Schools
  • Community organizations
  • Mental health agencies

These experiences prepare you for licensure and real-world practice. Placements are arranged in your local community whenever possible. The USM MSW program currently has 55 practicum partnerships across 15 states and is continuously adding agencies each semester.


Accreditation and Licensure

The University of Saint Mary MSW is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)—the gold standard for social work education.

This means:

  • Your degree meets national standards for quality
  • You are eligible and prepared to sit for exams to pursue social work licensure, including 
    • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
    • Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), (with additional supervised experience)
  • Coursework and field education align with licensing requirements in Kansas and most states

What Can You Do With an MSW?

Graduates of the MSW program pursue careers in: Clinical social work, Mental health counseling, Healthcare and hospital systems, School social work, Community advocacy and nonprofit leadership. Some graduates go on to pursue licensure as Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW).

Admissions Requirements

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 (or conditional consideration)
  • Official transcripts
  • Completed application and resume 
  • The GRE is not required

Advanced Standing applicants must hold a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program


How long does the MSW program take?

Completion time varies by track, with advanced standing students able to finish in as little as one year.


Is the MSW program online?

Yes. Coursework is delivered online with flexible scheduling options.


Does the program prepare me for licensure?

Yes. The curriculum and field experience are designed to support various licensure pathways, including LMSW, LSW, and LCSW.


Can I work while earning my MSW?

Yes. The flexible online format is designed for working professionals.

Dr. Joe Squillace is an associate professor and director of the social work programs at the University of Saint Mary and has been in social work higher education for over 25 years. He is the author of numerous scholarly and advocacy publications covering social work education, health care access and Medicaid, and dental and mental health care for children.

Highlights:
Dr. Bea is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Kentucky with extensive clinical experience in pediatric and adult mental and behavioral health, substance abuse, mental health education and training. She earned her BA in Psychology from the University of Kentucky, her MSSW from the University of Louisville, and her DSW from the University of Kentucky. She has published in The New Social Worker magazine, presented at numerous conferences on mental health, parenting, grief, secondary trauma, wellness, ancestral methods of healing and social work education. She is a member of the Kentucky Society of Clinical Social Work, Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy at Loyola Chicago, Coalition of Black Social Workers, CSWE, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.

Jen has practiced as a clinical social worker since 2009. Her professional experiences include case management, clinical care coordination, school-based social work, health care counseling and therapy, and facilitating Medicaid Waiver services. She volunteers at the “Life of a Single Mom” support group. Jen is a first-generation Haitian American graduate from her family and is fluent in Haitian Creole.

She has practiced as a clinical social worker for the past 10 years. Her professional experiences include facilitating direct social work practice and mental health counseling to individuals, families, and groups.
