(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary Journalism and Communications Club (JCOM) has announced its inaugural Christian Yanos Excellence in Photojournalism Contest and Gallery.

Christian Yanos was a digital communications major and football player at Saint Mary when he passed away in 2018. JCOM established the Photojournalism Contest and Gallery to commemorate Yanos and the work he was unable to finish while at USM.

USM digital communications students are invited to submit their work in two categories: news and sports. Three judges will select the best work in each category and award a Photo of the Year. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, JCOM will host an online gallery on its website starting on May 3. View the works at usmspiretimes.com.

JCOM will host a virtual reception and awards presentation at 2 p.m. on May 7. To RSVP, email Dr. Laveda Peterlin, digital communications program director, at laveda.peterlin@stmary.edu.

The Photo of the Year will be displayed on the Digital Communications Wall of Fame in Saint Mary Hall on USM's Main Campus at 4100 South 4th Street, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

JCOM plans to host the contest and gallery annually.
