Headshot of Tamara Lopez-MonarrezWhat do you love most about being a student at Saint Mary?

One thing I love most about being a student at Saint Mary has been the different opportunities that were brought to me. With volunteering, you get to experience a little of everything.

What are you studying, and what drew you to that field?

I’m currently studying Special Education (Elementary Education) and Sports Management (Coaching). What drew me into these fields was my passion for wanting to cause an impact on these children – knowing they deserve way more than what many have received. I know I’m capable of making a change in those students’ lives. Coaching was inspired by my own coaches back at home. They allowed me to get a feel, and I loved feeling accomplished seeing the growth in the youth.

What has been your favorite class or professor so far, and why?

My favorite professor this far has been Professor McGlinn. Her patience is one of a kind. She really knows how to talk to people and what activities are meant for what in order for her students to actually get hands-on experience and grow.

How have you gotten involved on campus (clubs, sports, organizations)?

I have gotten involved through my sports. My first year I was a part of the Spanish Club just surrounded by my own culture. My sophmore year, I joined the Green Club, which was something different and got me out of my comfort zone.

What is a memorable experience you've had during your time at Saint Mary?

A memorable experience I’ve had at Saint Mary so far definitely involves the unexpected friendships I’ve made throughout the years.

How has Saint Mary helped you grow personally and academically?

Saint Mary has helped me grow personally and academically by getting me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to challenge myself in so many different ways to reach my success.

What are your goals after graduation, and how are you preparing for them?

A couple goals I have after graduation are being able to start my own little AAU team and starting to get in my education field! I’ve been preparing for them by keeping in contact with those who have done this longer and can guide me.

Do you have any tips or advice for incoming freshmen?

I would say enjoy your freshman year but prioritize your studies. Make sure the fun comes after your work is done and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself here and there. A good challenge can help with your self discipline!

What is your favorite campus tradition or event?

My favorite campus event are the events hosted by the RAs at the dorms. The different activities allow us to be the students together.

How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your social life and extracurricular activities?

Balance has been something that I had to learn and struggled with for a while, but I had to prioritize from most important to least and working around a set schedule in order to get things done!
