What do you love most about being a student at Saint Mary?

What I love most about Saint Mary is the sense of community I find everywhere I go. Whether I'm at the Annunciation Chapel, Berkel Stadium, or even in the First-Gen room, there is always someone to talk to and connect with. The people here have introduced me to new ideas and perspectives, and this constant exchange has truly shaped my experience.

What are you studying, and what drew you to that field?

I am studying exercise science with a focus on physical therapy. I have always been fascinated by how the human body functions and how movement connects to healing. My goal is to become a sports physical therapist and work alongside athletes in their recovery process, helping them get back to doing what they love most.

What has been your favorite class or professor so far, and why?

My favorite class has been Anatomy and Physiology, taught by Dr. Coop and Dr. Kat. The course was definitely challenging, to be sure, but the material interested me beyond what I expected. I loved learning about how every system in the body works together as a whole. It almost feels like magic when you understand how perfectly everything works together to make us function.

I also have to mention Professor Luke Langston as one of my favorite professors at USM. I might be a little biased since he taught at my high school before coming to USM, but his College Algebra class here was straightforward and easy to understand because of his teaching style, which I appreciated. He also tries to crack jokes in class, which I always found hilarious. Professor Langston has a passion for teaching like no other and consistently brings a positive attitude to the classroom. He has been one of my most understanding professors, and I know I can always turn to him for help with any math-related course.

How have you gotten involved on campus (clubs, sports, organizations)?

I play for the USM Women's tennis team, which has introduced me to my lifelong friends and has pushed me to be a better student, athlete, and person.

I am a First-Generation Mentor, which is something I am passionate about. I love being able to share what I have learned with other first-gen students so they can feel supported and confident in their college journey. I am grateful for the opportunity to help others.

Additionally, I serve as the Social Media Manager for the Honors Leadership Council, overseeing the social media presence of the Honors program and club. I enjoy creating engaging posts to draw more attention to our program and working alongside amazing people in the council. Since I've always enjoyed graphic design (I love using Adobe), this position allows me to combine creativity with leadership in a way that is meaningful to me.

What is a memorable experience you've had during your time at Saint Mary?

One of my most memorable experiences was traveling with my tennis team. Competing while representing USM and the amazing team I am part of has always been a blessing. I have built bonds with my teammates on and off the courts, which is something I will always cherish. Whether it is long bus rides with karaoke sessions, late-night study sessions before a tournament, or cheering each other on during matches, those moments made me realize how much I have grown and how lucky I am to be surrounded by such supportive people.

How has Saint Mary helped you grow personally and academically?

Saint Mary has helped me become more confident and self-disciplined. I have learned to balance academics, athletics, work, and leadership roles, which has taught me how to manage my time effectively, stay organized, and maintain good grades. Personally, I have learned to step out of my comfort zone by speaking up in certain situations and building meaningful connections. The faculty and staff here care about our success, and that support has encouraged me to push myself further than I thought possible and become the best version of myself.

What are your goals after graduation, and how are you preparing for them?

After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school here at USM or at KU to earn my Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. I am preparing by gaining hands-on experience, maintaining a strong GPA, and taking courses that challenge me and further my understanding. I also try to stay active in the field by shadowing professionals and continuing to learn about rehabilitation methods in my courses.

I currently work at a pharmacy, which has helped me develop communication skills with patients and taught me about working with insurance and healthcare systems. This job has strengthened my understanding of patient care, which will be valuable in my future career as a physical therapist.

Do you have any tips or advice for incoming freshmen?

My biggest advice for incoming freshmen is to get involved! Do not be afraid to explore new interests by joining clubs, organizations, or sports teams. Take advantage of the opportunities offered on campus. It can help you grow both personally and academically. Attend games like football, soccer, basketball, or any other exciting sport played by incredible student-athletes to show your school spirit!

Most importantly, remember that it is okay to feel overwhelmed at times. College is a learning experience for everyone, and you will find your rhythm as you go. Stay organized, reach out for help when you need it, and remember to enjoy your journey here!

What is your favorite campus tradition or event?

My favorite event is Silent Disco! It is such a fun way to step away from work and laugh with friends. It is great to see everyone come together for a night of pure joy and random dancing.

My favorite tradition is Homecoming Week! Since I love sports, I always look forward to the games and activities happening across campus throughout the week. It is an exciting time to celebrate with friends, show our school pride, and support our teams.

How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your social life and extracurricular activities?

Balancing everything takes discipline and planning. I use my Outlook calendar to organize my schedule and make sure I am keeping up with assignments, practices, work, and church. I also make time for self-care and social activities, even if it is just grabbing coffee and cheesecake with my friends at our local coffee shop after class.  For me, balance means giving my best to each part of my life while still allowing myself to rest and enjoy the experiences I have along the way!
