Joey Schultz, U'25
What have you been up to since graduating from Saint Mary?
Since graduating from the University of Saint Mary in Spring of 2025, I’ve been working as a Mortgage Banker with LeaderOne Financial. I help families secure one of the most important assets of their lives, A HOME. After graduating, I’ve remained active in both the community and basketball, by coaching AAU basketball at the high school level.
What is your current job or role, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I am currently a Mortgage Banker with LeaderOne Financial. I love being able to guide people through the process of buying a home and provide them with the knowledge and support they need to make one of the most important financial decisions they’ll ever make. It is very rewarding to build relationships with clients and see the direct impact of my work on their lives.
How did your time at Saint Mary prepare you for your career?
My time at Saint Mary prepared me for my career by teaching me the importance of discipline, accountability, and building personal connections. Balancing academics and athletics helped me stay organized, be reliable, and manage my time effectively. At the same time, the small-but-meaningful community allowed me to develop strong relationships with peers and mentors, which taught me how to connect with people on a deeper level. These skills I now use every day as I guide families through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
What is a memorable experience you had during your time at Saint Mary?
One of the most memorable experiences I had at Saint Mary was winning the KCAC conference title at home. Playing in front of such a large and energetic crowd was incredible, and it made all the challenges and frustrations we had faced throughout my career feel completely worth it.
Have you stayed in touch with any of your professors or classmates?
I’ve mainly stayed in touch with some of my former teammates, and I keep up with a few professors and classmates through LinkedIn, but I haven’t maintained close contact outside of that.
What advice would you give to current students or recent graduates?
My advice to current students and recent graduates is to focus on building relationships, staying disciplined, and being reliable. The ability to connect with people and learn from every opportunity. Whether in the classroom, on the court, or in your community, will set you up for success in your career.
Are there any achievements or milestones you would like to share with the Saint Mary community?
I’ve been fortunate to find early success in my career and had meaningful experiences during my college years. Overall, I feel really blessed for the opportunities and people in my life that have helped me get to where I am today.
How do you stay connected with the Saint Mary alumni network?
I stay connected with the Saint Mary alumni network by attending basketball games whenever I can, and I’m also very active on LinkedIn, keeping in touch with classmates, teammates, and professors.
What hobbies or interests are you currently pursuing?
Currently, I enjoy playing golf and coaching basketball. Golf gives me a chance to relax and challenge myself, while coaching allows me to stay connected to the game and mentor young athletes.
Do you have any favorite Saint Mary traditions that you still cherish?
I don’t have any specific traditions, but what I really cherish from my time at Saint Mary are the people I met and the relationships I built.
