Discover the past, excel for the future
“The past is always a rebuke to the present.” — Robert Penn Warren
A Global Mission
» USM history majors often tailor the program to their interests – and learning moves beyond the classroom with service learning trips across the globe.
Recent destinations have included stops in Washington, D.C., New York City, Russia, Japan, Canada, and Peru.
It has been said that in order to understand life today, we must study the past.
At the University of Saint Mary, history majors dig into the depths of history to unlock the mysteries that have shaped modern society. Through small class sizes and professors who build a close-knit community, USM’s history program challenges students to think not only outside of the box – but beyond it as well.
History majors at USM excel, thanks to:
Individualized attention from talented, expert professors
Analytical approaches to learning, pushing students to “dig deeper”
Emphasis on evaluating historical significance, movements and trends
Students also develop effective written and verbal skills, designed to help interpret, analyze, and critique primary and secondary historical sources. Graduates use these skills and more to construct well-developed arguments in the career force or in graduate school.
