Dr. Anand Shetty
Dr. Anand Shetty is responsible for teaching Research in Physical Therapy I, Clinical Human Anatomy, Medical Physiology, and Clinical Human Anatomy Laboratory at the University of Saint Mary. Prior to joining the USM faculy, Dr. Shetty taught Anatomy with Dissection, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Community Health, Research I, Research II, Research III, Research IV, Comprehensive Exam I and II, and Special Topics at Hampton University, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program since 1998.
Dr. Shetty completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Mysore University (India) in 1977 with physics, mathematics, and statistics as his majors. He finished his Bachelor of Science in physical education from Karnatak University in 1978, and in 1979, he earned his master’s degree in physical education specializing in biomechanics and exercise physiology from Mysore University (India).
Dr. Shetty taught physical education for two years as an assistant lecturer at a physical education college in India before earning his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1986 with a concentration in Biomechanics.
Dr. Shetty has more than 25 years of teaching, research, and community service experience in the field of exercise science and physical therapy at several institutions, starting at Rice University in 1987. Dr. Shetty has also attended several continuing education classes in anatomy at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School. He regularly attends conferences in biomechanics, exercise physiology and anatomy.
In 2006, his research on Teen Obesity received attention by the American Heart Association (AHA) and national and international news coverage. He has published and presented numerous research articles at national and international conferences. His current research is investigating the relationship between leisure time activities and body-mass indices of college-aged African-American women. He is the co-author of three textbooks that were published in India for physical education students. He has also received internal and external grants for his research in the past. Dr. Shetty has travelled extensively to research presentations and has also been an invited speaker in India in the area of Physiological Variations in Athletic Performance.
