(Leavenworth, Kan.)—For the third year in a row, the University of Saint Mary has been named as a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. The honor goes to the top 15 percent of U.S. colleges, universities, and trade schools that do the most to serve the unique needs of military service members, veterans, and family members as they work to attain their education.
According to G.I. Jobs, a publication of Victory Media, schools on the 2013 Military Friendly Schools list go out of their way to provide the best college experience for military students. They also exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience, including on-campus veterans programs and flexibility for active-duty students. USM, for its part, is a VA Yellow Ribbon Program participant, and has an on-campus office for veterans services and a veterans services coordinator with over 24 years of military experience.
The list was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey that saw G.I. Jobs poll more than 12,000 schools nationwide. Nationally, 1,739 schools made the list.
Learn More About USM's offerings for veterans “Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows USM’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, director for G.I. Jobs and vice president at Victory Media. “As interest in education grows, we’re thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”
Carlton Philpot, USM’s veterans services coordinator and a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, said “Saint Mary always feels proud, privileged, and honored to be able to serve and support our country’s veterans, active duty personnel, and military families as they work to meet their academic goals.
“With each passing semester and with each veteran, active duty, dependent, or spouse we enroll and assist, we are always improving at serving the educational needs of those who served this nation proudly.”
USM Academic Vice President Dr. Bryan Le Beau added “we are honored to be considered among the colleges and universities in the nation that are doing the most for America’s veterans as students.”
“Veterans bring maturity, seriousness of purpose, and leadership to the classroom. As a member of the Leavenworth community, home to Fort Leavenworth, we willingly provide support for veterans. Most importantly, we do what we do for veterans because it is the right thing to do, to thank them for the service they have provided all of us, often at considerable personal sacrifice,” said Dr. Le Beau.
The Military Friendly Schools media and website, located online at militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools, and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences.
