KCAC Honors Spires Greenberg, Williams, and Dowdy

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—Three University of Saint Mary student-athletes from the Spires Men’s Basketball Team have earned all-conference honors from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) for their play during the recently concluded regular season.

Leading the Spires honorees is guard Grant Greenberg, of Leavenworth, who was named KCAC Freshman of the Year, as well as First Team All-Conference and to the KCAC All-Freshmen Team. During the season, Greenberg won multiple KCAC Player of the Week awards and set USM’s single-season scoring record.

“I knew Grant would be good right away but I didn’t see the type of season he had as a freshman coming,” said USM Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jon Bishop. “He established himself as one of the top three players in the KCAC in a year where the league was loaded with great players. To do that as a freshman is outstanding.”

USM seniors Shiron Williams, a guard from Bangor, Mich., and Torren Dowdy, a guard from West St. Paul, Minn., were named All-Conference Honorable Mention. Dowdy was also named to the KCAC’s All-Defensive Team.

“I think the coaches got it right voting Shiron to the All-Conference team even though he only played in 16 games,” Coach Bishop said. “There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind had he been able to play the entire season he would have been a First, Second, or Third Team selection. For him to accomplish what he did in this league in just 16 games is quite remarkable.

“Torren was one of our ‘go to’ guys all season long. He had a great year for us both on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.”

The Saint Mary Men’s Basketball Team finished the season fourth in the KCAC with an 11-7 conference record, and a 17-12 mark overall.

“I’ve always said that if you have success as a team then you will have individual success,” Coach Bishop said. “Finishing 17-12 and fourth in the KCAC was a good accomplishment as a team and some of our individual awards would not have happened without that team success.”

Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit www.gospires.com to learn more about USM athletics.
